Wild Sorrow (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

This series is a wonderful treat for those who miss having new books by Tony Hillerman. Much like HIllerman, Sandi Ault writes beautiful descriptions of the southwest landscape, and delves into the cultures of the region, through her characters and mysteries. Jamaica Wild is an agent with the Bureau of Land Management, based in northern New Mexico. In this book she continues to receive guidance and wisdom from two elders, who help her learn their cultures, one from the Tanoa Pueblo, and one a Hispanic healer. Jamaica also shares he life with Mountain, the wolf she has raised from a pup, and Mountain is another interesting character in these stories. Along with excellent character development, the mysteries are tightly plotted; this time the mystery centers around a woman found frozen in a long abandoned Indian school, a school where many Indian children were treated with emotional cruelty and harsh punishments. While telling a fascinating story, the author also relates some sad chapters in our national history. I don't remember how this book came to my 'to read' list. It wasn't recommended - it may have been a suggested Nook Book. However, it got there, I'm glad it did. I wanted to get one book off the 'to read' shelf and Wild Sorrow made the cut. I really liked the characters - Jamaica, Kerry, etc. It reminded me of Tony Hillerman's books which I've enjoyed as well. Anyway, I downloaded #1 in the Wild Mystery series a few minutes ago. Looks like the rest of the books in my 'to read' pile will have to wait while I get to know Jamaica a bit better.
