I'm a big baseball fan and reading about Willie makes me remember my childhood when we discussed who was the best: Willie, Duke or Mickey. It became clear later on that Willie was one of the two or three best all time players. It is a thorough biography (maybe a little too thorough) but with very little critical analysis of Willie's activities especially his absence from participating in the Civil Rights movmeent of the 50s and 60s. Still a fun buck. Good book, but somewhat of an encomium to Willie (not that it's not deserved.) I learned a lot and have increased respect for the man. I wish we had video to see some of the talent and ability that made him such a legend; Hirsch shows that not always are statistics sufficient to describe the value of a player. Another outstanding baseball player we are left to wonder "what would his statistics have been if he hadn't had to serve in the military in his prime?" Only one major complaint - I thought it deserved to be 660 pages.
A good book that goes into a lot of detail about this great ball player.
