Women Of The Word: How To Study The Bible With Both Our Hearts And Our Minds (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Very practical step-by-step process for how we can read our Bibles better and with greater understanding. While its not the only way to read the Bible well, I appreciate the author giving us a jumping off point. Though much of the application seems a little intimidating when you're trying to figure out how to fit study the way the author describes into your schedule, I think once you get over it and just try it, you'll realize that yes, it takes time, but it's worth it! I think this book will result in a huge change in my life - by changing the way I read the Bible.Over a year ago I made a goal to read the whole Bible by 2016. I bought a study Bible and began reading two chapters a night religiously (pun intended). I knew I wasn't reading the Bible right -- I wasn't studying it. I would read through it and then read the commentary in the margins and go to bed. I did not have any desire or the patience to change this. My study habits have never been good, which is part of the problem. I like to simply read and assume that I will remember later what is important, which is to my detriment during test time in the classroom in college and in the classroom of life. (That's part of why I love Goodreads -- I love writing reviews on books so I can look back later and remember why I liked/didn't like a book.)Wilkin helped me to see the importance of overcoming my impatience and lack of desire and becoming a student of the Bible. By turning over these feelings to God, I have felt a sudden change when I pick up my Bible. I never even thought to do this, just like I never thought to pray as I pick up and put down the Bible every day. Wilkin brought a spotlight onto pieces of my spiritual life that I did not know were missing! As I walked through Chapter 8 of Women of the Word, I did the study of James 1:1-1:18 with her, using the methods she explained. I loved doing it. Last year, I had an in-depth study of Philippians, which I always enjoyed studying and got a lot out of that study. I assumed this was not something I could discipline myself to do on my own. Now I think it is something I look forward to doing daily. Discipline is very important to my growth in general, and I plan to take Wilkin's steps to Bible studying and implement it into my daily discipline of spending time with God. I also hope to find a Bible study that is taught like she explains it should be taught in Chapter 9. I am very appreciative that this book was given to me and for the guidance it has provided to me today and in the days to come.
