Wonder Horse: The True Story Of The World's Smartest Horse (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Those of us who spend our days with animals remain convinced that our animal companions have intelligence and can learn to communicate. While others might pooh-pooh that notion, this picture book offers some possible evidence to support it. The story of the two characters, a man and a horse, cannot be separated, and the author makes it clear how ahead of his time Bill (Doc) Key was in his treatment of animals. Unlike others of that time period, he was convinced that treating them with kindness and compassion would Born in 1889, Jim Key was a sickly foal not likely to live. But somehow, he did, and he coaxed his master, Doc Key, born a slave in 1833, to play fetch with him. Over many years, Doc taught the horse to read letters and to identify numbers and colors. The two traveled across the countryside to show off Jim's talents. As a result of what they saw during those shows, many children pledged to treat their own animals in a more humane way. It's hard to decide which part of the story is most moving, but clearly, the two of these, man and beast, had a strong bond. The story is written with respect and appreciation for Doc, and the illustrations show the affection between the two as well as Jim Key's playful personality. It might have taken years for the horse to learn his ABC's, but eventually, he certainly did. Guaranteed to tug at the heart strings, this picture book will have high appeal with young readers, especially animal lovers. Particularly effective in this book is the gentle reminder that every action matters and that all creatures should be treated gently, not a bad lesson for all of us. Jim Key wasn't much to look at when he was born as a foal with crooked legs, but when his fun temperament helped him connect with his owner, Doc Key, Doc spent the next several years teaching Jim Key things like the alphabet and arithmetic! Then they went on the road, giving shows.Really interesting little book! I think kids would love seeing a horse who can do math and stuff. I also think this would be a great starting point for a research project about Jim Key and what animals can learn.
