Words Of Silk (2005) - Plot & Excerpts

This book was originally written back in the 80's and it shows. The heroine, a naive kindergarten teacher, manages to land herself in an elevator during a blackout with a handsome older guy. She has a fit of the vapors and he ends up carrying her back to his apartment where he thinks it would be a grand idea to soothe her with some brandy and some good lovin'. Naive, innocent and virginal our brilliant heroine ends up downing two drinks and begging this stranger to have sex. She wakes up conveniently forgetting everything and scurries away while he's showering (or something ~ my mind was wandering a bit I'm afraid). And of course she ends up preggers. This all happens in the opening chapters and what follows only serves to annoy and irritate me further. Shall I go on? [spoilers may abound so be warned:] Our "hero" manages to track down our heroine several months later through some stealthy detective work and quickly insinuates his way into her life. He shows up at her place of employment and declares himself to be her no-longer-estranged husband (she lied because, I guess back in the 80's it was taboo to be a single mom & a kindergarten teacher without getting fired?). This charmer then moves himself into her home and completely takes over, even going so far as to psychoanalyze her after knowing her all of a few days. But you know what's even more irritating than the lack of any sort of emotional connection between these two? This guy rubs her belly and calls the kid "skooter". That just drove me absolutely nuts. What kind of guy calls an unborn baby "skooter"? She puts up the token resistance but then he touches her and, ooooh, ahhhhh, all thoughts of fighting are over and the sex begins anew. Ick. Who is this creep and who the hell does he think he is? Anyway, it's time to wrap this up. All sex, no relationship = an irritated me.

What do You think about Words Of Silk (2005)?

I was really in the mood to read a quick, short romance novel, so I turned to Sandra Brown! I really enjoy her stories and she definitely knows how to write romance. Perusing my shelves, I found Words of Silk, so I picked it up and started reading right away. This is an older book of hers, but I still really enjoyed it. There wasn't as much substance in it as I would have liked, but that happens in a shorter story. It definitely isn't Brown's best work, and I like her newer novels much better, but at the same time, it was just what I was looking for last night: a really quick, light read. I listened to this book in one day. It was silly, totally unrealistic, and at times, really corny, but it was an easy read. It's not really an erotic type novel because older terms are used, but the writing of the steamy parts were pretty good, and there is quite a bit of it in this story. This book is pure romance, no intrigue or suspense. The male hero is a little odd, and might even be considered a stalker in the beginning, but as I said, this story is not one of realism. Real people just don't act this way!!Basically if you like pure romance with the hero spouting silky, passionate, mostly unrealistic dialog, (hence the title), this may be the book for you. Add in some sexy interludes and a heroine who starts off meek and timid and gets more emboldened as the book goes on. This audio book had 5 discs and was read by a man, a familiar reader who I like, and he did a great job with the steamy stuff. I really don't know why, but I was hooked after the 1st disc and had to follow it through. But the time I got done, I was pretty much ready for it to end, as I was just spent!!

I had the audio book in the car. This book is really not my genre. It was a romance based on the usual, girl is a virgin and somehow doesn't really have anything to do with her first sexual experience with an older somewhat hardened man. The man, Deke, is really a control freak and the woman is a child emotionally. The story is simply, the man wants her, bullies her and marries her. Lots of sex, the woman doesn't want it but really does, too much. It kept me awake which was what I needed but I will not read this author or genre again.
