Jim Traverse gently grabbed her elbow and lifted her to her feet. When she collapsed again, the Artist effortlessly scooped her over his shoulder. Her shrieks burned her throat. How could they be real? The helicopter still circled overhead, and its noise drowned all of her thoughts in its immensity. Several of the former inmates, orderlies, and doctors stumbled awkwardly over the lawn, and Mina saw them for what they really were. She was only afraid whenever she closed her eyes and dreamt. Now, for the first time since Daddy began to punish her for taking Mommy away, Mina was afraid. "Please don't let them get me!" Mina pleaded, though it was unlikely Traverse could hear her over the helicopter. Jim sat her down against the side of a car in the parking lot and looked into her face. His roving eyes found hers, and he gently stroked her face to get her attention.
