What's worse than a zombie invasion? The evil that lurks in the hearts and minds of men. The theme began in Zombie, Ohio, and moves now to the corruption of Chicago Illinois. It's kind of like The Walking Dead meeting The Boss. Telling the tale from three alternating character POVs both helps and hinders the narrative, since pure chance allegedly throws together these three -- and they happen to be the only three who can "save the day." But forget that, this is a good read! I was really surprised by this book. I wasn't terribly impressed by "Zombie, Ohio", so I went into this simply because it was a zombie book, and this is October. However, it is remarkably good. Extremely good, actually. It takes the form of a political thriller that plays out over the course of the first day of a zombie apocalypse in Chicago, and is told from the perspectives of three very different people who end up embroiled in the disaster and the subsequent machinations of corrupt city officials as they attempt a coup. The story is very good, the perspective characters are sympathetic and human, there is some sharp social satire and observations on the dysfunction of large, multiethic cities, and there is a goodly dose of grim, but almost giddy horror. Really fun read.
