100 Things That Make Me Happy (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Schwartz, A. (2014). 100 things that make me happy. New York, NY: Abrams Appleseed. Category: PoetryAward/Starred Review: "Amazon Best Books of 2014"Place found: Amazon.com I have always been one to love all the little things in life and find the joy in the smallest parts of my day. I felt like this book was written by the 4-year old version of me. Schwartz has created a list of all the little things in life that "make me happy," but that relate to a young child's view of happiness. Things like a puppy's nose, for instance, is one of the 100 things in the book. Although some may say that this book is repetitive, I think Schwartz does a good job of making the illlustrations and subjects flow from one thing to the next. I would use this in my classroom as a journaling and writing activity. After reading this to the whole class I may have them write a sentence about what little thing makes them happy. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for something like this. The poetic element adds a wonderful touch! This was a fun book. I won this book as part of the good reads first reads giveaways. I read it to my 3 and 6 year olds and they both enjoyed it. It's cute and I'm a fan of rhyming books. My only complaints are that 1. It doesn't have any sort of message or storyline. It does capture the attention of young kids with the rhyming and the awesome artwork. The illustrations are really cute. Which brings me to complaint# 2, the illustrations are on both sides of the dust jacket and the backside makes a cute poster of the 100 things in the book. My 3 year old has already asked me if we can hang it in his room, however, there is no title and very little art on the hard cover inside so if I hang the poster it leaves kind of a sad looking book behind. Overall, it was an easy read and I see it becoming a favorite in my house. If you have a child that loves rhyming books, definitely check this out!
