13 Palavras (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Lemony Snicket tells a tale about a despondant bird who paints, and the friendly dog trying to cheer it up. Of course, cake and hats with panache and a mezzo-soprano and a goat are involved. (It's Lemony Snicket, are you really surprised?)If you know a little one who likes big words, or if you're a language arts teacher looking for a creative model for your students to follow in using their vocabulary words, this just might be what you're looking for. The 13 words are rather random and range in difficulty from bird and dog to haberdashery and panache and would seem to lead readers on a rather wild ride. But the words are connected by a basic story that is ultimately one anyone can relate to, that of a friend trying to cheer up another friend. The illustration style is bright and somewhat random in perfect compliment to Snicket's style. You'll probably love this book or end up scratching your head over it (or some odd combination of both), all are common reactions to Snicket. this is a picture book that tells the story through 13, words: bird, despondent, cake, dog, busy, convertible, goat, hat, haberdashery, scarlet, baby, panache, and mezzo-soprano. This book is good for students who are learning vocabulary words. Since the book lists the words and gives examples on how to use them, children could learn both how to spell them and how to use them in writing. A teaching idea would be to have students create their own book out of 5-10 vocabulary words. This book fits into the picture book genre and format. The reading level would be lower level elementary. I would use this in my classroom by having children learn how to spell and use the vocabulary definitions in their writing. This book would be good for any gender, race or socioeconomic status. Snicket, L., & Kalman, M. (2010). 13 words. New York, NY: Harper.
