360 Degrees Longitude: One Family's Journey Around The World (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

This book takes armchair traveling to a whole new level. I truly felt that i visited every one of the 28 countries the Highams visited. John's sense of humor is wonderful and a much needed asset to all of the unexpected trials that would occur during a 52 week expedition with two "tweenage" children. I must acknowledge his editor as it would be so challenging to choose the best, most compelling moments to include in a book of this magnitude. One unusual thing I noticed was the lack of copyright date- when did this trip happen? I'm assuming it is around 2007 with all of the Harry Potter references. Plus technology was at a different place- smart phones didn't take selfies (thankfully.) The best part was the closeness of the family and how when they returned to domestic life, they made it a priority to plan alone time together. I started this book on a Saturday and finished it the next evening. What a great story. I found it impossible to put down, the writing style was great and everything just flowed. I laughed and cried right along with the family, I felt as if I were there with them. I thought it would be more of a travel guide, however, John Higham had my attention from the first to last page. Anyone who wants to read about courage, generosity, faith, travel and history need to read this book.I received my copy thru Goodreads First Reads.Thank you to the Higham family for sharing their wonderful experience with us. Showed how easy it is to actually live an alternative type of lifestyle. Wonderful.

Our own six month adventure seems pretty tame now. And I'm okay with that! :)
