A Day At The Office (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

There were so many mixed reviews on goodreads about this book and I was trying to decide whether to read it when I stumbled across the phrase "something like an old English farce." Those were the magic words! Immediately, I bought the Kindle book and started reading it. :o). Lovely book, fun Valentine's Days story, if you ever find yourself at home with nothing to do on Valentine's evening. :o)I enjoyed that it was set in England and I enjoyed reading all of the English expressions and happenings. I actually laughed out loud several times as I read. I thought it was such a nice device that it all occurred in one day--Valentine's Day. I did not think it was difficult at all to keep the different characters straight (contrary to what one reviewer wrote on goodreads). I thoroughly enjoyed the story and there really was an element of the farcical, which I like when it is done right, which this was. There was some of sexual innuendo and people hoping to have sex, but nothing that went over that imaginary borderline I have where I would have had to stop reading. I would say the references were about on par with McCall-Smith's references in 44 Scotland Street, for example. I may need to look through goodreads to see whether any other books by this author would interest me. Amusing and light hearted look at office politics and relationships, particularly surrounding Valentine's Day. I kept thinking that the story reminded me of a good old British farce!''For most people, Valentine’s Day means flowers, chocolates, and candlelit dinners. But for five of Seek Software’s employees, it’s shaping up to be as much fun as a trip to the dentist.Long-term singleton Sophie has a crush on colleague Nathan but worries he doesn’t even know her name. And is there really any point in her sending a card to the man who organises the annual office Anti-Valentine’s party?Overweight, insecure, and still living with his mum, Calum’s desperate for a girlfriend. He’s recently met the woman of his dreams online but his exaggerated profile might mean tonight’s first date could also be their last.Mark’s been besotted with Julie since she kissed him at the office Christmas party. While she doesn’t seem to remember a thing, today might be his best chance to remind her. If only he could work out how.''
