When she comes by, I tell her I can’t explain what the extras are for because I’m in a hurry, but that I’ll fill her in later. “You look tired,” she says. “I may be tired, but I’m satisfied,” I say. “I’ll sleep tonight.” Not only are the boys not stirring in the barn, but Alvin Carter is lying on his sleeping bag snoring like he doesn’t have a care in the world. The boys are piled up on the straw, Buster sprawled out like he’s been pushed over and is lying where he fell, and Jimmy curled into a ball.
