A Galaxy Unknown (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Okay, where to start... Before I read any of this series I read the author's comments on his writing. He had a lot to say about what constitutes a space opera. His books are written based on his interpretation of what a space opera should be. From that perspective I would give him more than three stars. However, overall I have to say the writing was a bit sloppy. The story moved at a great pace but sometimes at the expense of some resolution. The sudden change in the protagonist's personality after being revived didn't seem to have a real anchor point. And this anchor should be essential to understanding her as the series continues. At the end I began to have flashbacks of Honor Harrington. I hope this doesn't distract from the series.I did enjoy the book. I overlooked the inconsistent writing and focused on the overall story. Since reading it I have read the second and third. I will continue reading the series. ;) I really enjoyed this book, but it has several flaws...hence the 3-star rating.First of all, there are a lot of expository lumps that could be handled much more smoothly. Second, there are several copyediting problems; I especially noticed issues with comma usage. Third, it was blatantly obvious that certain things happened specifically to set up the character for a long series...particularly the experimental DNA treatment and the favorite videogame. Finally, the Head Pirate does more mustache-twirling monologuing than Snidely Whiplash as a James Bond villain, and the slavery subplot feels (to be kind) forced. With all that said, now that the character and setting have been established, I hope to see big improvements in the next book. The main character is a mixture of elements from Buck Rogers and Black Jack Geary (cryosleeping hero), the J.J. Abrams version of James Kirk (insanely fast promotion out of the Academy), Kris Longknife (incredibly competent junior officer), and Honor Harrington (eternal youth). Let's see if she can live up to their names...
