Amy Julia and her husband have their first baby. They are excited new parents, but when they get the news their precious little one has Downs Syndrome, they have to work through that. Amy Julia is honest about working through her emotions on having a "special needs" child and her hopes and dreams are changed for Penny. She shows raw emotion and speaks from her heart. If you have a special needs child and are discouraged, you need to read this book! The honesty, willingness to share dark worries and personal shortcomings was refreshing. It was harder to relate because of not personally sharing the author's religious beliefs, but I appreciated her journey toward reconciling her Christian faith with some of her intellectual presumptions. The book did feel a bit brief and unfinished, but that makes sense given that it ended when her child was only around three. The journey further into school years and community would likely have added more depth and given the book more of a lasting impression.
This book challenged me and made me think better of people. It is honest, wise, and well-written.
