A Higher Call: An Incredible True Story Of Combat And Chivalry In The War-Torn Skies Of World War II (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
A Higher Call (Unabridged) Author: Adam Makos Date:15-MAR-2013 Narrator:Robertson Dean Provider:Penguin Group (USA) Inc. Running Time:6 h 13 min when, in the introduction, the claim is made that what happened between the american bomber pilot and the german fighter pilot was unique, i scoffed. i knew of at least one american bomber being shepherded/escorted to safety during WWII ... but I think what happened WAS unique. this is an extraordinary story that is true and makes us rethink the "us" versus "them" attitudes and concepts that surface in times of conflict. this should be on the reading list for every 20th century history class in US high schools ... A true story.A true story that gives you a pretty visceral look at the collapse of German society during waning period of the war.I also didn't know too much about the Luftwaffe. My knowledge was limited to Goering and the overview you may find in a survey class on Nazi Germany. Through Franz Stigler's story, you get a pretty interesting look into the culture fostered by the German Air Force. We too often throw all Germans into the Nazi mold, and we do a disservice to the memory of people whose only crime was living in a terror state.Anyway, the story was quite touching. The American plays only a supporting role in a story that is largely focused on Franz. The author's forward and notes at the end provide a very personal flair to a story, and there's a wonderful assortment of photos in the center of the book as well.I'd recommend this to anyone with an interest in World War II and military history.
