A Moderna Ciência Do Yoga: Os Riscos E As Recompensas (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
This is a really important book for anyone teaching or wanting to teach Yoga. It may ruffle some feathers, because Broad provides some shocking truths behind the Yoga culture in America--such as prominent teachers requiring surgeries because they've wrecked their bodies doing Yoga. Crazy. Be careful when choosing a teacher training and especially when teaching others. It takes years of study and practice to understand the body, Yoga, and how to practice safely. My passing interest in yoga prompted me to pick up this book, and it turned out to be very well-researched and informative. There were many things about the practice of yoga that I didn't know, including several risks which had been documented but not widely publicized. The benefits of yoga certainly seem to outweigh the risks, and Broad discusses these in detail - such as slowing the body's metabolism, increasing levels of neurotransmitters which reduce stress and anxiety, and the research behind certain poses being used in physical therapy. The author also stresses the fact that there is no governing body to regulate yoga's many branches and styles, and I am glad to have read the book and understand the research before even setting foot inside a yoga class. I could see this book being helpful for those teaching yoga, but also to anyone who has an interest in the practice.
