The Science Of Yoga: The Risks And The Rewards (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Nowadays yoga is a part of popular culture, sometimes represented as a miracle cure for all the diseases that helps you lose weight without breaking a sweat or going on a diet. From Lululemon yoga pants to sleek Yoga Magazine covers - it is fashionable. This book attempts to seek out the scientific evidence, or the lack of, behind the success of yoga.I really enjoyed the author's facts based writing style. The extensive notes and references make this book feel more like a thesis than a regular read. And although, in places it does get a little bit dry with all the names and dates of published research, at the end of reading it I felt like I have learned something new, without being pushed into either the side of yoga-sceptics or enthusiasts. I am a Yoga teacher. As I read the first third of the book I was impressed. The literature review was good. A number of studies were left out and several areas were omitted. That said, at the end of the book, I could not agree with a number of Mr. Broad's interpretations and he clearly does not understand some of areas. For example, his argument to license Yoga teachers does not take some information into account. First, nearly a decade ago, Yoga Alliance actively fought against licensure because licensure is about saying a profession is good within a single domain. Yoga is physical, spiritual, and psychological. How would it be licensed and for what purpose? Bear all this in mind if you want to consider this book.
