A Season Beyond A Kiss (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

FINALLY!!!! JEFF GETS HIS OWN BOOK!We first met Jeff in Kathleens first book, The Flame and the Flower, as Brandon's lighthearted, loveable, devilish and charming younger brother. An immeadiate ally of Heather, Jeff often goaded his brother into reluctantly admitting and acknowledging his feelings for the wife he was intent on punishing, even going so far as to defend her often himself. Finally in a book all his own, we have Jeff married to the beautiful Raelynn, a girl whom he saved from the auction block and wed to offer her protection (Read this in two short stories in the anthologies Kathleen participated in). While Jeff is eager to claim his wife in every sense of the word, Raelynn is hesitant to give so much of herself to the man who seems almost too good to be true. When she does finally relent and give in to the desires she shares with Jeff, their marital bliss is cut short with the discovery of a brutal crime, the murder of a young girl on the grounds of their plantation, with Jeff named the cheif suspect. Unsure of herself and the man she married, she must confront both her feelings and the circumstances surrounding the crime and determine whether she stands with or against her husband. I have to say, I love love LOVED this book mainly because Jeff was my favorite character from the Flame and the Flower (anyone who thinks he didnt MAKE that book is crazy)! I did find Raelynn to be downright frustrating at times with what felt like her determination to injure herself in a melodramatic effort to run from her feelings for her husband! (view spoiler)[ Really Raelynn.... Someone was literally stabbed to death on your property and yet you're going to RUN AWAY to the woods? (hide spoiler)]

1.5 starsSadly this book was such a disappointment. The story was slow and predictable. Also it felt like I'm missing parts of the book or background information. Like I started reading in the middle of the story. The heroine was weak, whiny and childish. I can't understand why a strong hero like Jeff would ever fall for a woman like that. I was really disappointed because I liked the other two books about the Birmingham men very much. I had high hopes for this one too, sadly it fell short.I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. Just skip it and read some other by this author.

What do You think about A Season Beyond A Kiss (2000)?

The language through first two hundred pages of marital bliss was so cloyingly overdone and full of irritating bodice ripper minutia, I almost didn't give it a chance. However, if you do get through it, when the going gets tough for the main characters, the good story starts. I loved Jeff who reminded me of my husband in his decisiveness and unwillingness to settle for less than the best, even from his love. It gets all silly towards the end with the hilarious German baddie, but the middle (pages 200-300) is worth a read. The reason I picked this book up in the first place was that its about what happens after they are already married, not the typical "happily thereafter" plot. I also liked that Jeff was older but patient with her obvious youth. A fair amount of plot is also from "his" prospective, where she does the declaring of love to him, which is unusually refreshing.
