A Song Of Ice And Fire - A Game Of Thrones, A Clash Of Kings, A Storm Of Swords, A Feast For Crows, A Dance With Dragons (2000) - Plot & Excerpts
Finished reading all six books of this epic fantasy saga , "The Song of Ice and Fire", better known as "The Game of Thrones ". Each book is nearly a thousand pages of small print. The book has literally thousands of characters, histories and back stories, detailed word pictures and a fantasy world so detailed that it almost appears real. All these years, I never took a few genres seriously. Young Adult, Fantasy and horror were a few amongst them. I regret my choice. I believe the correct way to read fiction is to read all genres. The larger than life canvas and the dramatic events which fantasy provides, is really a liberating and cathartic experience.I can confidently say that some of the best books I read this year were from Young Adult genre. Plan to try some horror soon.Whilst it is very difficult to recommend a 6000 pages book to everyone, I would definitely recommend this book to avid readers. The characters seen in this epic are so detailed, I can safely say rarely have I seen such detailed depiction so many multidimensional characters. I would highly recommend this book especially to aspiring writers: His storytelling and character development have few other parallels. John Snow, Tyrion, Danerys, Cersei are so flesh and blood I have actually started missing them.Start it at your own peril: You will be restless for months devouring the books. But if you do, rest assured that a roller coaster ride of treachery, deceit, villainy, sorcery and over the top fantasy awaits you! I have read all 5 books. The first 3 books were page turners mainly because of the novelty of this story line, the characters and the way it was told. It also seemed like Martin’s story was going somewhere, taking a long scenic route. However, about 1/3 into the 4th book I felt like my teeth were being pulled out. Characters and events doing “a whole lot of nothing” and it was clear there was no end in mind. The books became like a soap opera or Harlequin variety store literature - that extend stories and spin events that are seemingly different, but in their foundation are very repetitive - just decorated differently. After reading the 5th book, a marginal improvement from the 4th but still underwhelming, I came to the conclusion that one has to learn how to “end” something. The best analogy I can draw here is a singer - soprano in an opera who holds a high C for too long. At first, the note at its time in the song, is moving, riveting even, but if she holds it too long, it changes from music to noise - from moving and inspiring to irritating. In this series, my level of respect for this literature plummeted during the fourth book and will never quite remember how the “high opinion” felt in the beginning.

Best book/saga I have read in a while. I would even venture that I liked it better than LOTR
