I subscribed to HBO when the "Game of Thrones" series began. I viewed the first season, then dropped HBO because I preferred to spend my time with a book rather than TV. The younger members of my family convinced me that I was missing a great story, and so I purchased this Kindle boxed set.I really enjoyed the first three volumes I would give those 4 or 5 stars. I got about half-way through the 4th volume when I began to realize that the author was getting tired of writing this epic. When I read his notes to this book I knew I was right. The fifth book wasn't much better, and I began to get bored since the author seemed to be taking me around in circles leading to nowhere.Here is my brief summary of the book. If you find a character in the book that has any dignity or integrity, he or she will be murdered, maimed, stabbed in the back, disemboweled or reach some other grisly end. Cream does not drift to the top. There are more characters in these books than in all Russian literature combined. At the end of the fifth book you'll find a loose end or two, or three, or four, or more: more than enough to justify a sixth volume.My advice don't start. Its not worth the trip. Go and reread "Lord of the Rings" at least you'll enjoy the experience. Not necessarily going to win any literary awards with overused tropes, inconsistent use of 'ye olde language' and Martins proclivity for gore and death for mere shock value. Nevertheless this is absolutely readable, absorbing and will whisk you away to a world somehow familiar yet utterly different to your own. Suitable to many reading levels, this book also has the unique ability only given to a few others in that even the most dyslexic, attention deficit people I know will sit down long enough to get "just one more page!"Mostly notably, Martins obvious deep understanding of European history and courtly intrigue used as a significant inspiration for this series, interwoven with unwise twists Oman mythology is to be reccomend end. Those seeking to understand the tone of history rather than content would benefit in reading this series.
