A Wandering Heart (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I really enjoyed reading "A Wandering Heart". The last book in the Angel Island series.Liza Martin and Claire North drove to Cape Light to run some errands. When they arrived Main Street was crowded and they had a hard time finding a parking space. Liza and Claire walked to the hardware store and found the door was locked with a note taped to the glass. They noticed a lot of people headed toward the harbor and village green, so they decided to go see what was going on. When the women reached the harbor, a large crowd had gathered, the parking lot was filled with several long white trailers and a few big-box trucks and vans. It was a movie set, with a large crew, big lights on metal tripods, miles of long black cables, and cameras on rolling machinery. It was a romance movie with Charlotte Miller and Nick Dempsey playing the main characters in “A Wandering Heart”. When Liza returned to the Angel Inn she spotted Daniel Merritt’s truck, he was working on one of the window shutters that had come down during the last storm. Daniel and Liza were officially a couple now, though their courtship hit a few bumps along the way. Judy Kramer, a production associate for Winding Hill Films, came by the inn to see about reserving rooms for the cast and crew. Liza was excited to have no vacancy at the inn for several days. The Gilroy Farm, was run by Audrey and Rob Gilroy, they sold cheese, fudge, skin lotion, and soaps, all made with goat milk. Audrey and Rob also grew lavender and were selling the blooms during the summer. Audrey and Rob had been trying to start a family; they went to Boston to see a fertility doctor. During a rainstorm, Audrey heard a dog barking; she got out of bed and went outside to find the dog. She brought the dog into the screened-in porch; the dog was hungry and thirsty. She gave the dog some chicken and potatoes to eat and some water to drink. She got an old afghan, folded it twice, put it in the corner of the room, away from the doors and windows. The next day, the dog stole the toast off of Rob’s plate. Audrey decided to take the dog into town with her to see if Walter and Marion, the owners of the General Store, recognized the dog. She also brought flyers she made on her computer to post around town, with the dog’s picture and her phone number. The dog took one of her husband’s boots and chewed the laces. She took the dog to the shelter in Essex to have the dog scanned for a microchip. A veterinary assistance scanned the dog but couldn’t find a microchip. Audrey decided to take the dog home with her. The next day, the movie cast and crew arrived at the Angel Inn, where they would stay while filming at the beach. Liza was introduced to Charlotte Miller and Nick Dempsey when they arrived at the inn. Meredith, who was Charlotte’s assistance, was in charge of getting anything that Charlotte wanted. When the fog had cleared, Charlotte and Nick headed down to the beach to get started filming their first scene together. After trying to film the scene twice, Charlotte decided she needed a break; she walked down the rock jetty and was knocked into the ocean. She felt like she was drowning and couldn’t catch her breath. A large fishing boat came into view, it was driven by Colin Doyle, he stopped the boat, dropped the rope ladder and a cork life preserver into the water. Colin helped pull Charlotte out of the water and brought her down into the cabin of the boat. After Colin dropped Charlotte back at the dock, she was brought back to the inn, where she took a hot shower and ate a bowl of soup. Audrey, who was a registered nurse, came by to check on Charlotte. After Audrey left the room, Charlotte decided to lie down and take a nap. She was exhausted from falling into the ocean and being rescued by Colin was a blessing. Later that evening, Colin stopped by with a bouquet of flowers and to see how Charlotte was feeling. Liza couldn’t help but notice that Colin had some crush on Charlotte. Charlotte wanted to go on a bike ride to explore the island, since she wasn’t needed to film anything for the day. She wanted to try to find out where Colin lived, she knew he lived along a little peninsula called Thompson Bend. As she was riding, a big red pickup truck came up behind her causing her to fall off her bike. It turned out to be Colin behind the wheel; he put her bike in the back of his truck and helped her get in the passenger’s seat. He drove her back to his house to help bandage her knee. After staying at his house for a while it was time to head back to the inn. Colin dropped her off a little ways down from the inn. She didn’t want Colin to get caught up in Hollywood rumors. She felt herself falling for Colin but knew it wouldn’t work out.Colin and Charlotte went out on the boat to a private island to enjoy a picnic lunch. Charlotte and Colin went fishing and they talked about their lives growing up. Charlotte ended up catching more fish then Colin did. After fishing, they ate lunch which consisted of fruit, cheese, crackers, and a bottle of white wine. When it started to get dark they headed back to the dock. After Colin helped Charlotte off the boat, he leaned in to kiss her. Nick Dempsey stopped at the Gilroy Farm to take a look around. He was interested in seeing how Audrey made goat cheese. Audrey fixed a gift basket for Nick to take back to his wife in California. Audrey asked Nick if she could take pictures of him with the goats in the background. Millie (the dog that Audrey rescued) wanted her picture taken with Nick and Audrey. Nick wanted to open a restaurant in California when he was done filming movies. Lily, Charlotte’s sister called saying some reporters found her and their mother to ask them questions. Charlotte was scared because she didn’t want anybody to find out about her stepfather’s abuse. When she noticed a reporter in the doorway of the inn she decided to sneak out the back way. She walked down to the dock, where she saw Colin’s boat; she climbed on board and went down into the cabin. Colin found her in his boat, decided to take her back to his house to hide out. Charlotte left the island after the film was done. Liza found a package Charlotte had left for Colin. She had knitted Colin a hat and scarf, in dark khaki-colored wool with thin yellow and navy blue bands of color. He told Liza and Claire he was leaving on Friday for a fishing trip. Mr. Broussard called Audrey about Sunny his dog that ran away while he was in rehab. Audrey was sad about losing Mille but Mr. Broussard told her she could come visit them anytime. Charlotte returned to the Angel Inn after spending a few weeks with her family in Ohio. She had come back to see Colin not realizing he had gone on a fishing trip. Liza, Claire, and Charlotte drove to the General Store to see if Marion and Walter Doyle could get in touch with Colin on his boat. When Walter tried to get in touch with Colin’s boat, he got a Mayday signal, meaning Colin’s boat was in trouble. The weather channel was reporting the storms that hit Maine, Colin’s boat was found but he wasn’t inside. The Coast Guard was searching in the water for Colin. Daniel arrived back at the inn when he found out about Colin. Daniel drove Liza and Charlotte to Portland where Colin would be brought once the Coast Guard locates him in the water. Charlotte was the first person to see Colin when the boat brought him to the dock. The EMT’s brought Colin to the hospital and allowed Charlotte to ride with them.Once at the hospital, Colin was taken back to be examined. Charlotte was allowed to see Colin once he was in a room. In the room Colin told Charlotte he loves her and she loves him too. She finally told Colin about her past, what her stepfather had done to her family. Audrey found out she was pregnant. Liza decided to have a clambake, to celebrate a wonderful end to an eventful summer. Mille was able to return to live with Audrey and Rob because Mr. Broussard was moving into an assisted living community. The summer was certainly challenging with Audrey and Rob, in such despair and now happily expecting. Charlotte and Colin – how this special place brought them together, and their impossible, against-all-odds romance finally worked out, and were planning a beautiful future together. The season had come to give thanks and allowed them to count their blessings. Book 3 in the series, An Angel Island Novel, is another sweet read by the team of Thomas Kinkade and Katherine Spencer, where island folklore told of angels that helped a community of residents near death. Actress Charlotte Miller, who covers a world of past hurts with a beautiful smile, has come to the island to stay at the inn with a movie crew, all set to film her new and upcoming with co-star Nick Dempsey. When a rogue wave tumbles the troubled Charlotte into the ocean, it is fisherman Colin Doyle who jumps in and rescues her. As the two form a quick attachment, Charlotte knows that the attraction can not last and sadly breaks it off. Meanwhile, goat farmer and cheesemakers Audrey and Rob are having heartaches of their own - will they have to give up their beloved Gilroy Farm in order to move to Boston for fertility treatments....The world lost a beloved artist on April 6 - the Painter of Light and author Kinkade passed away at his home.
