A World Without Heroes (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Review by Jose C, age 12The first book to the Beyonders series was amazing. I truly enjoyed reading this book. Brandon Mull definitely “is a wizard with words,” to quote a review from Rick Riordan. Brandon Mull certainly put the book together in a good way, which I have no idea how. It seems straightforward. Except, perhaps, when they meet the displacer, or when it ends, or when Jason is challenged at (I can’t say), or when he meets the (I still can’t say). There are many surprises waiting to be uncovered. Like other medieval-themed action books, there was just the pain setting and book type that made it special, along with the ordering and thought and planning in it, which makes it double-special along with other books I’ve read. This adventure in a medieval-aged world to find a word to destroy an evil wizard emperor was quite creative. The book had different stages, where they were at a specific place, or when they were getting from or to somewhere. A lot of these pages had action or something interesting going on in them, and it all fit together nonetheless. This book is just as good as the other books with similar themes. This normal 12 year-old kid named Jason Walker lives in Vista, Colorado and is an attendant at the Vista zoo. Unlike his family of dentists, he has interests in baseball and animals. The animal interest led him to his job at the zoo. One day, something completely random and unnatural occurs to Jason; as he tries to find a mysterious music coming from the hippo tank, he suddenly falls in. What's so strange is that the throat of the hippo leads Jason to a mysterious world with a medieval-like setting. His curiosity leads him a quest. A quest
