Yee knows how to make her characters live an breathe and she certainly does this here. However, even though the themes were heavy and Maybe has many trials (including an attempted rape)the book comes off as farce. At the end I could imagine all the characters joining hands and taking a deep bow on stage. I found myself enjoying reading it. The chapters are short and the pacing is very well done. I think it will be a hit with reluctant reader girls, which makes me cringe a little because of the PG13 language and content. (Prudish librarian coming out here.) Maybelline stands out in a crowd. She has kool-aid colored hair, purple lipstick, tons of black eyeliner, and wears men's xl black t-shirts. She is as opposite of her former beauty queen turned charm school owner mom, Chessy, as possible. Maybe's life is far from perfect. Her mom just announced marriage number seven in the same breath as telling Maybe she's an embarrassment. What else is there to do do but go with her best friend Ted and her buddy Hollywood to Los Angeles to search for something better, like her biological father.Maybe is a complex character who captures many of the feelings of doubt that young girls experience. While some of the plot events are really convenient, it is a strong story with likeable characters. it would probably appeal more to girls but I think guys could make it through.
What do You think about Absolutely Maybe (2009)?
I felt like everything happened way too easily and conveniently for all of the characters.
