Against All Odds LP: My Life Of Hardship, Fast Breaks, And Second Chances (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
If you can make it through the straight-shooting, laundry-list-like prose, he (and his ghostwriter) surely convince me he's one kick-ass dude. There's something to be said for staying focused on your values and goals (but did he really avoid drugs while in the midst of the Studio 54 NYC modeling scene? The writing tries very hard to convince us of his flawlessness throughout ). The attitude that "we each create our own playing fields, and that we are all capable of overcoming whatever challenges might otherwise hold us back" is certainly a healthy and effective way to approach life. Above all, what I gain from the book is the understanding that Scott Brown embraced his competitive nature early on in his life. He welcomed and cultivated his need to be on top, to be the best at whatever game he decided to play. If a person has a strong desire to succeed, to win, and make a positive difference, shouldn't they do whatever it takes to overcome their own challenges? Scott Brown, a Republican from Massachusetts, ran for the Senate seat which was vacant as a result of the death of Edward Kennedy in 2009. In a special election, Brown stunned the political world by winning the election in a state where Democrats rule. In a famous exchange during the campaign, Brown reminded the electorate that the seat commonly referred to as "the Kennedy seat" was actually the people's seat. The book details the extraordinary life of Brown, describing the many hardships he endured and survived as he grew up. It seems that many in our society would use these events and "disadvantages" as excuses for a life of dependence and bitterness. Instead of succumbing to the chaos, Brown proclaims that "there isn't one thing I would change: not the arrests, not the violence, not the hunger, not the beatings and the brute struggles . I wouldn't change any of it because those years and that life made me the man I am today."Written with candor, humor, and insight, this Is an uplifting story.
