Age Of Ra (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

The Age of Ra by James Lovegrove. Where to start with this book. It's difficult, because while it's not a terrible read I can't think of anything particularly good to say about it. I was entertained. That's about the best I can come up with. It's got a creative idea at its center. All the mythologies, gods, and pantheons to have ever been worshiped are all real. They've always been real and they've always been at war until the Egyptian Pantheon emerges as the victor. It would be interesting to see a world wide society that believes in this Pantheon. Unfortunately while you do get glimpses of it throughout the book, most of its time is spent on an average action/thriller story about brotherhood and revolution. The characters aren't that interesting outside of the Gods themselves. There are only three human characters of any significance and none of them are that likable. There's the main character who is the least interesting of the three. He feels so generic in his background as a soldier who signed on to spite his father. There's the Lightbringer who is the most interesting of the three being a leader in a Humanist movement that challenges the Gods of the Egyptian Pantheon. The third is a female soldier who spends most of her time being something that our protagonist desires. While it entertained me while I was reading it and it has a premise with potential, it just doesn't live up to what it could be thanks to uninteresting characters and a generic plot. I'm not going to waste a lot of time with a long review, so I am just going to say that this book made Twilight seem like Wuthering Heights by comparison. dreadful wafer-thin plot. Boring predictable characters. Uninspired descriptions. And! He mixed up the names of Ra's barques. Ugh. Don't read it, regardless of how beguiling the premise seems. It's not even so-bad-it's-good. It's just plain awful. Avoid. At. All. Costs.

What do You think about Age Of Ra (2009)?

Meh... Got better as it moved along, but more cheesy warfare sci tech than sci fi...
