Ali In Wonderland (Enhanced Edition): And Other Tall Tales (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
I, like so many others I see here in the reviews area, wanted to like this book. But dang, it's just not funny, it's not even remotely amusing really. I like Ali, I liked her show, Head Case and I really really wanted to like this book. But I just can't, heck, I can't even finish the book. I've made it half-way through and I just need to stop, I haven't smiled, chuckled, or guffawed even once! Life's too short to read a book that doesn't work for ya. I liked the author's voice but didn't feel that she had much to say. I enjoyed her style but found the content lacking. She grew up surrounded by a luxury beyond anyone I know in real life (that she somehow identifies as "middle class"), yet life to her and her acquaintances is boring and uninspired. Everyone around her seemed to be stoned or drunk, living empty, pointless lives. I guess I'm just not the right audience for her humor, and I have no interest in the circles of celebrities, politicians, or botox-loving socialites. Then when she got to the chapter whining about vacations, I almost had to put it down. The life she complains (albeit comedic-ally) about is a life many of us would like to experience for ourselves - "After you've been to all the spots hailed by Expedia, they start to blend together. Did we dance to that steel band and eat grilled snapper in Antigua? Barbados? Or was that a fortieth birthday in Teaneck? We took the cruise from Puerto Vallarta? Or was it Greenland?" Oh, let's all weep tears for the poor little rich girl, bored by her exotic vacations.
