Mary could see the emotions flitting across her face, and she kept glancing over her shoulder as if she was expecting to hear gunshots. When Jasmine came to the dining room and found her sister there, Amaryllis could see the gleeful grin on her face and wanted to vomit. “Papa’s looking for you!” Amaryllis pushed her plate away, even though it was barely touched. She looked at her mother. “Will you come with me?” Mary shook her head. “You have to face these consequences on your own.” She squeezed Amaryllis’s hand as she stood to leave the dining room. Amaryllis took a deep breath and walked through the quiet house to her father’s office. She opened the door and walked just inside standing there waiting to hear what her father had to say to her. “Sit down, Amaryllis.” Her father’s eyes were sad, but no longer angry as they had been earlier. Amaryllis took the empty chair beside Alex, because it was the one her father had indicated. She sat quietly looking at her hands, afraid to say anything.
