Amazing X-Men, Volume 1 (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I remember the day when comics used to have to explain how a dead character wasn't really dead. Now, going to heaven or hell to rescue them seems to increasingly be the thing.Anywho, this is a fun romp that makes good use of Nightcrawler's past continuity. Unsurprisingly, the first issue is the strongest, because it's set at the school, and Aaron's writing has always been *much* stronger at the school than on field trips. It's all enjoyable though.I can't say, however, that I've been convinced to pick up Amazing, especially not if it's intended to be light-hearted adventuring of this sort. We'll see if the next run is going to be any longer than Aaron's, or if this is just going to be a creator-of-the-month sort of title … Currently this is the best X-men series I have ever read. Jason Aaron has got to be one of the best writers at Marvel. Marvel has me hook on everything X-men and I was hoping that I would not have to follow yet again another X-men book. To say was this book good is an understatement. First I have to say I really enjoyed the first issues of Amazing X-men because Nightcrawler is one of my favorite X-men characters. Its not just the fact he can teleport anywhere, or he is a master swordsman, or even has an incredible blue demon design, but being a follower of Christ I always found it amazingly iconic and ironic that the guy who looks like a demon is actually a devout Christian man. Nightcrawler is one of those encouraging purely good heroes. Sometimes we all need someone to aspire to become. No matter how dark the world gets Kurt AKA Nightcrawler is always optimistic and has enormous faith in that if you strive to be good and protect your fellow man and always seek God's purpose there is great reward not only in this life but for those who have faith also in the next. This first volume is well written and Ed McGuiness really draws great X-men characters. The colors in this book really pop as well. The story is simple but yet has a thought provoking ending. I really enjoyed the humor and dialogue. Azazel was a great villain and it is funny some of the things that happens in the Marvel Universe's version of Heaven and Hell. Great read!!! This is a five star graphic novel all the way. Also I would recommend reading Jason Aaron's current writing in the Thor books and Wolverine and the X-men.
