And Then There Were Nuns: Adventures In A Cloistered Life (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

This is my first ebook. It was weird & I realize that I can only read certain types of books this way for now. This was interesting but I don't know how many people I would recommend this book to as religion can be a touchy subject. The author is questioning and searching which I think is quite relatable but her devotion and faith may not be common. She is certainly not traditional, and I found her interesting but ultimately it changed focus in a way that I wasn't expecting. Overall, I did like it. This is Jane Christmas's most recent book and one I really enjoyed. Jane shares the discernment she went through over an 18 month period, to determine what her formal commitment could/would be to a monastic community within the Anglicon or Roman Cathlic church. The book gives us insight into four different monastic communities, the basic rhythms of monastic life, histories of the orders and the towns in which they were established, and the politics notably around the threat of women becoming priests and bishops within Christian churches. Jane also shares her personal struggle facing a rape thirty years in the past and how engagement in a contemplative communities of prayer opened space for her to face a personal demon.I appreciated the insights shared in this book and for me personally many things resonated notably the value of silence and what happens when we embrace and delve into silence; the value and gains of stepping outside of the familiar in order to really learn who you are; and the importance of becoming still and listening to our inner voice.I feel this book presents a good balance of experience and emotions within the journey that Jane Christmas set out to travel.
