Angry Conversation With God (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Being burned by God only to discover real joy in Him alone? Finding out that everything you ever wanted pales in comparison to what He has in mind? It's been awhile since I've read a spiritual memoir that I could relate to so well. I feel humbled and blessed to have learned some of these lessons a little sooner than Susan, but God is always good for a well-placed reminder... I thought it was a little slow at the beginning, or I was slow to get into the style, but it is definitely worth the full read. Susan is smart and honest, and the real God shows up! This is an honest, laugh out loud funny memoir about one woman's spiritual journey and crisis as she worked out her relationship with God. As the person who recommended it to me said, it is not for everyone, but I sure liked it. Sometimes it is good to be brutally honest about the relationship that we have or don't have with God.Susan was/is a woman struggling with her acting career and the pitfalls that life brought her. The book is written as part narrative, part verbatim from her counseling sessions with Rudy, her pastor/therapist. She went to get help with her "marriage" to God, as she called it. 6 months into the sessions, Susan says that God walked out on the counseling because He was tired of her whining about what she didn't have, about the life that she felt entitled to, the dreams that she saw others achieve while she sat in misery. In the end, she learned some important things about herself and her relationship with God. She was a single woman in her 40's wondering why she didn't have a man, why her colleagues seemed to have more success in their acting careers, why things weren't working according to HER plan for her life, versus God's Plan for her life. Once she came to terms with the reality of her whining, her perception of God, she asked her therapist to help her get a divorce from the messed up version of God that she had been seeing so that Susan could begin to live this "marriage" with the REAL God. She is still on that journey, but she is doing it with courage, hope and honesty with herself and her God. Very refreshing.
