Antigoddess has several of my favorite things (Greek mythology, prickly heroines, good action) so I wasn't surprised that I liked it. Kendare Blake has an earnest way of writing that fits a contemporary setting well, and I really, really like how she portrayed Athena (which is not at all how I'd ever imagined her).It was a wee bit complicated in that there were some questions not answered, which I hope will be addressed in book 2 (like, WHY do other gods think they will be able to fight their deaths if they kill their fellows? Or is it just a chance for vengeance, petty and stupid?). I'm also hoping we see a few more Greek gods and goddesses in book 2, because I'd love to see what she does with a modern-day Dionysus. And Hestia!Given the believable, fun characters and the fact that it's a Greek mythology action novel set in modern day, I recommend it for both fans of Greek mythology and gods, and fans of contemporary magical realism. And urban fantasy. Also for fans of female protagonists, romance that isn't terribly sticky, and those who don't mind a little violence in their action plot. I know I'll be grabbing Book 2 in the series. Times have changed. It seems that the gods meant to live forever are dying, each in their own way, and no one knows why. Athena is on the hunt for answers, but may not like what she finds. Cassandra is blissfully unaware of gods and their problems. Sure it's weird that she knows things before they happen, but that's no big deal. Right? But when Athena's clues lead her to Cassandra's doorstep and Cassandra discovers that she is not as removed from the gods and their issues as she'd like to think, legends of the past bring the present to a grinding halt. I really appreciate this more honest view of the gods. Typically, authors tend to make them out to be a little too human for my taste; humans that just happen to have god-like abilities. But that's just not the case. Blake has delivered a cold and honest picture of these Grecian legends. They aren't human - even the good guys. They struggle to be more understanding and less calculating. Technically, this book dragged for me in the beginning. Good storyline, but it could have moved along a little quicker. That said, the second half of the book was hard to put down. The action was well-paced and enticing. I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Greek gods, the Trojan War, or a band of misfits trying to save their world. Just be prepared for a little gore and a not-so-happy story.
What do You think about Antibohyně (2014)?
