Aphrodite (2004) - Plot & Excerpts

I gave it four, because I couldn't give it 3 1/2 stars and I don't think it deserved 3. I liked it quite a bit and the characters were believable. There were some nasty characters created, some were created so well I didn't even want to read what there were thinking. It was a good book with a range of storylines and suspense, but my only negative comments would be that it was finished too quickly. In the beginning and throughout, some innocent people were killed in some terrible ways, and a lot of detail and time was given to describing their deaths, but when it got to the end to kill the villains, they were killed off so quickly that I didn't feel they received their correct retribution/punishment. I didn't want gory deaths for them - (the innocent deaths were almost too gory for me, making me almost question reading this book)- just a bit more description showing they got what was coming to them. I understand that the main character wasn't a bad person and therefore certain killings would not suit his MO, but I think the killing's at the end were wrapped up so fast it didn't leave me with a feeling of satisfaction that everything was resolved.

4.5 really.I finished this one a few days ago, but it took me until now to come up with what I wanted to say. First off, this book has been lingering far too long on my shelf. Given my New Year's ResolutTion was to clear off my shelf of books, I grabbed this one at random. It was much better than I planned. I've been burnt by genetic/scientific thrillers before. So I really wasn't too keen on reading another. I am so glad I did. It had an extremely well thought out plot, excellent characters, and plausible realistic science (granted, I am not too technical when it comes to science in a FICTION book, but to me to buy into it, it must make sense. This one does). I am looking forward to more by this author.

What do You think about Aphrodite (2004)?

This was a fairly decent thriller. Nothing fantastic about it but it was a good solid read, which didn't take long to finish. Weighs in at about 450 pages.[return][return]Set in America, the main character is former hot shot detective who went to hide out in a sleepy town after a tragedy killed his wife and daughter. He's been giving our parking tickets for years, is seriously unfit and likes a few drinks every night. Now he's got a multiple murder case, and the shadowy perpetrators are now looking to silence him as well...
