My newly-five-year-old son picked this book out from the library today. He was looking for an ABC book, and this one kind of jumped out at him.I liked this book for the most part. I loved that the alphabet was used to tell a story -- very clever. I liked the retro-looking illustration, so retro, in fact, that the dog looked like Snoopy from the very early Peanuts comic strips. I liked much of the book, except the ending. It felt flat. I didn't need a moral or anything so high-minded. It just felt like the author was stumped by Z, so the dog went to sleep. Zzzzz. The book was so clever up until then that I expected more. Another great read aloud for the pre-school set. A super book to read about the alphabet about a dog that wants to eat the delicious apple pie a girl is making. Usually alphabet books don't work as a read aloud because they are too long. This was awesome, with the children saying each letter as I got to each page. Also great, since there was some new vocabulary to share. This would also work for a dog or apple theme story time.
What do You think about Apple Pie ABC (2011)?
An absolute must for lovers of ABC books. Kids will giggle endlessly over this frisky dog.
