Love these illustrations. I've read this dog's ABC book before and it went well. I think the simplicity of the text and much of the story being in the pictures is appealing to the kids. Can't hurt to try this!4/30/14 Put in my dogs theme. I had them telling me what objects were being numbered. "There are 7 whats on this page? And 8 whats on this page?" A twist on the counting, and while it didn't have them actually doing "1, 2" it had them looking and estimating amounts. And they followed the story as we went along. Alison Murray counts to ten with the same mischievous dog we followed through the alphabet in Apple Pie ABC. He runs off with a girl's red Mary Jane shoe and she spends the rest of the book chasing him to retrieve it. The text is a simple twist on "One, two, buckle my shoe," so it is the illustrations that shine. Murray's Snoopy-like dog exudes nostalgia and fun. The matte pages complete the nostalgic feel and make this one I could bear to reread to my preschooler ad infinitum.
