At The Same Moment, Around The World (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
This book told time all across the world in a single day. It shows that everyone lives in the same world but the times are different depending on where you live. It tells of many different places across the world, some that I had never even heard of! The pictures are wonderful and culturally accurate. This book could be used to teach time zones and how time changes from place to place in the world. It could also be used to talk about different cultures and different places across the world. Some of the places I had never even heard of, such as New Caledonia, and it would be good to discover more about the different places across the world. You could also have students create their own stories based on the time zones, so instead of using the cities and countries in the book, they could look up and decide different cities to include in their own story. 4.3 starsPage by page, the book shows what children are doing around the world at the exact same moment. When it's 6:00 am in Senegal, a little girl is helping her father with his fishing catch of the day. At the exact same moment, it is 7:00 am in Paris, and a little boy drinks a cup of hot chocolate. At the exact same moment, it is 8:00 am in Bulgaria, and a little boy waits for his school bus. And so it goes...as the book illustrates all the time zones of the world. At the back of the book, it has a history of early timekeeping and of the development of time zones. And also at the end of the book, there is a fold out section with a 4-page spread of a large map of the world showing the location of each of the children. This visual representation of the time zones is a useful addition to the book.
