Back To You (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Back to You is the first book I have read by Jessica Scott and it definitely won't be the last. Beautifully written, Back to You is not only a captivating romance about second chances, but the author has also managed to give readers a glimpse into the heart and mind regarding some of the issues that military men and their families encounter. Though it is fiction, Back to You sheds light on the problems that can occur before during and after deployment, as well as some of the tragic situations that soldiers can face while overseas. I really loved the characters in this book and connected with both Laura and Trent immediately, finding myself able to understand where each of them were coming from and their different perspectives. Not only is this a captivating story, the romance is steamy and passionate, with just the right amount of humor incorporated in to help balance things out. Trent Davila is definitely hot, and his wife Laura is his perfect match in every way. I loved watching their relationship progress throughout the novel. The secondary characters were awesome also and I really enjoyed them also. Overall, Back to You is an excellent choice for those who love contemporary romance, and even more so for those who love military related romances. I really enjoyed it and most definitely recommend it. What a beautiful story of second chances. Trent technically died in combat, but he was resuscitated and survived. But ever since the bullet struck his chest, stopping his heart, he has slipped further and further from his wife and children. He doesn't allow himself to feel, pushes everything down into his subconscious while volunteering for mission after mission in an attempt to make amends for the lives lost when he survived his injury, until finally the distance between himself and his wife, Laura, is almost insurmountable. And then he is charged with crimes he didn't commit, threatening a court martial, and to top it off he is served with divorce papers. Meanwhile, Laura has been left behind for basically years, raising their two children alone, taking care of the house, keeping everything together while her husband drifts further and further from her reach, emotionally and physically. And then there start the rumors: Trent is being investigated for sexual misconduct and dereliction of duty, among other charges. It is the last straw for Laura, who sends Trent divorce papers while he is still in Iraq. This is a story of forgiveness, of both ones self and of others; it is a story of survival and survivor's guilt; it is a story of how war changes a person; and it is a story about second chances. Trent and Laura's story was heartbreaking to read, mostly because it is so very realistic. Being a member of the military or a spouse has to be one of the hardest things one can do in life—death is always lurking in a war zone, and the strength it must take to say goodbye to someone you love knowing they may not come home...well, this book does a good job of portraying the situation, in my opinion. I loved seeing Trent's slow improvement, and I loved that he wasn't cured in a few weeks; I loved seeing how much Trent and Laura still loved one another, despite everything, but they were both wary, cautious with one another which was so lifelike; I loved that Trent had real issues, and that he loved his family enough to go to counseling to work on them.

What do You think about Back To You (2014)?

3.5 stars. A very emotional story, but it was too redundant. Could've been a novella
