My review is vague as I do not want to leave any spoilers.Squirrels trying to take over the world? A unicorn bent on destruction? That and so much more made this book seem like it'd be a hilarious fantasy journey. And it was. I though the book was well written. Both of my kids enjoyed it as well, though I think they enjoyed it more than I did (9 and 10). I was really hoping there'd be some actual squirrel violence in the book, but I was left disappointed. The book took some very interesting twists that I was not expecting at all. I thought the main characters were fairly well developed. The ending? I loved it! It'll really leave you hanging... Bad Unicorn is like a cross between Harry Potter, Scooby Doo and Monty Python. Definitely a kooky, "punny" adventure. Max is the reluctant hero who discovers the Codex of Infinite Knowability under his bed. He shows it off at school and finds out that he is the only person who can actually read it. His best friend, Dirk, new friend and potential crush, Sarah and stereotypical dwarf, Dwight, get sucked into a time-traveling quest that none of them could have anticipated.Meanwhile, across time and space, magical creatures are vying for power and discover that Max just might hold the key to ruling the universe. Little does he know that a power (and human) hungry, egotistical unicorn with her wimpy wizard sidekick are now on the hunt for him--and anything or anyone else that gets in their way. Max could never imagine that he would have the guts or ability to stand up to such a foe, but believable or not, he is forced to do just that to save his friends and the entire human race. Grades 6 and up.

Very entertaining. The style reminds me of Lemony Snicket and Diana Wynne Jones.
