Becoming Fearless (Library Edition): My Ongoing Journey Of Learning To Trust God (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I actually read this book during my first week of walking on my treadmill at 5:30am. So maybe it was meant for me to read about sacrifice knowing how much I love my sleep. I have been overweight for most of my life, parents divorce was total surprise to everyone, I have strong family bonds....so I definitely could relate to Michelle's story. I thoroughly enjoyed that this book wasn't about Michelle being overweight or how she over came that obesity. We all know that part of the story. Has anyone NOT heard of The Biggest Loser or Jillian Michaels? If you haven't, you're either living under a rock or in a 3rd world country. This book was about the root of the issues that brought Michelle to the point of obesity and those sacrifices that brought her put of that black hole. I'm overweight myself and I know that there is a small percentage of people that truly have a medical reason for being overweight (disease, sickness, etc.). However, I also believe (without bearing too much of my own soul) that most of us become overweight after experiencing some sort of emotional or physical trauma. Nobody starts out being overweight, it is something that happens over time, not overnight. I enjoyed reading this book, although I wouldn't recommend or say that its for everyone. I read the free version, which must have been an advance reader copy as there were notes about mistakes in big pink blocks, and formatting problems. After reading her story, I wondered about people who struggle all of their lives without overcoming emotional and physical problems, and how much help these kinds of books really offer. Everyone is not granted the opportunities that came to Michelle, so I also wondered how much was God and how much was a young woman's determination to take advantage of every opportunity life gave her. On that point the story is inspirational. She could have quit. She didn't and was richly rewarded with the cash prize and career as a motivational speaker. While most of what happened is cast as God arranging things for her healing, she didn't have to be a Christian to have tenacity. As a child Michelle wanted to have a dramatic story to tell like the addicts and others who enjoyed the pleasures of sin. It appears God granted her desire. People raised in Christianity who never know the depths of sin, still have difficult circumstances to overcome. The story is brutally honest and fair to those involved. Even though raised in a Christian home and taught divorce is wrong, her parents fell short when her mother left with two of her five children. Michelle, emotionally wounded when her mother left her behind, struggled to forgive, but never cast Mom as the villain and learned everyone needs compassion.
