Bewitching: The Kendra Chronicles (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
This is my second work by Alex Finn and so far I love her work. Bewitching tells the story of two people Kendra, who is a witch that likes to meddle (she was responible for Beastly) and Emma, a nerd who loves to read and is manipulated by her personality disorder step-sister Lisette. It's a good read and it gives a brief history of Kendra, but focuses more on the Emma and Lissette story, which was kind of disappoiniting, but the three stories of Kendra's life were ok. I did love how the author used the theme of beauty in her book and how she addressed the issue of categorizing beautiful people as good and ugly people as bad and showed showed some empathy for the step-sisters in Cinderella, not to mention many classical novels. I hope she creates another story for Kendra soon. I have to say I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. However, I'm happy to say that, "I loved it". I really liked the way the author mixed in her own spin of some old classic tales, such as Hansel and Gretel to her story. Also, the retelling of historical events with a dash of her own imagination mixed in was a nice touch. There are actually a few stories woven together to make up the story of Kendra. These mini story "inserts" helped me understand Kendra's choices and did not distract me from the real story. Looking forward to reading some of the author's other books.
