Beyond Outrage (Expanded Edition): What Has Gone Wrong With Our Economy And Our Democracy, And How To Fix It (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Here's the book for anyone who would like to know more about what afflicts the U.S. economy and how we might begin to fix it, but only has a couple of hours for reading. Reich has limited himself to about 150 pages, surely in the hope that the book will appeal even to folks who don't make a habit of reading non-fiction.Reich has a genius for distilling his encyclopedic knowledge of history and economics for presentation that is easy to comprehend. Maybe I can compare him to Thomas Paine in this regard. I recently re-read (here assuming I MUST have read it as an undergraduate) "Common Sense," and guess what. It reads like common sense. While we're on that, I think I'd call "Beyond Outrage" a Pamphlet. That sounds easy to digest, doesn't it?Reich has also created an excellent short non-fiction film called "Inequality For All." In addition, he's an entertaining speaker and a witty, affable interviewee. He's easy to find on the internet. (There are plenty of books, too, of course.) Beyond Outrage by Robert B. Reich is a great analysis of what's gone wrong and how it can be changed by things that citizens can do. First, who is Robert Reich? He served in the administrations of Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter and was Secretary of Labor under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1997.Reich is currently Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. He was formerly a professor at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government[4] and professor of social and economic policy at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management of Brandeis University. He has also been a contributing editor of The New Republic, The American Prospect (also chairman and founding editor), Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. The sections of the book are: The Rigged Game, The Rise of the Regressive Right, and Beyond Outrage: What You Need to Do. In addition, the Appendix is President Obama's speech from Dec. 6, 2011 which Reich Calls "the most important economic speech of his or any modern presidency in terms of connecting the dots, laying out the reasons behind our economic and political crises, and asserting a willingness to take on the powerful and the privileged who have gamed the system to their advantage."It's a brief, concise book which clearly lays out the issues and what needs to happen - by us - to turn things around!
