Beyond Outrage: What Has Gone Wrong With Our Economy And Our Democracy, And How To Fix It (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
We all should make a choice to get a little more involved in politics is the subject of the third section "Beyond Outrage: What you need to do." The first section "The Rigged Game" deals with some facts such as from WWII to 1981 the top marginal tax rate never fell below 70%. President Eisenhower built the interstate highway system and the tax rate during his presidency was 91%! Part two "The Rise of the Regressive Right" he reveals that Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia in 2010 had participated in a political retreat hosted by the billionaire financiers Charles and David Koch, driving forces behind loosening restrictions on big money in politics. It was after this that the court handed down the Citizens United decision. Also before Justice Thomas was appointed the Koch Brother had spent $100,000 to support his nomination.Conservative, Progressive, Libertarian, Tea Party whatever your persuasion you will benefit from reading this excellent quickly readable book. Professor Reich will give you facts in this book that you can accept. Those that may be against your natural bent should be read and then try to figure out why they are not correct. We seriously need a new dirction to decrease the budget deficit and reform health care. Incidentally he doesn't believe "Obamacare" is the way to go. This is clearly a 5 star book. Temperate, moderate, rational, intelligent, fact-based, common sense. I use these words to describe not only the book but Robert Reich's writing style. Today's political writing is infused with angry, belligerent, and intolerant ranting and ravings that seldom motivate the reader to comprehend the issues. Reich is a breath of fresh air. I find his writing to be even-tempered and chock full of actual facts. Although he falls just short of calling for class warfare, this book really is about the affluent, companies and people, systematically dismantling our economy and subverting our democracy. Money, along with power, has been flowing to the top for decades only to culminate in what we call an economy and very little is being done to stop it. More than just pointing out and connecting the dots to our issues, Reich lays down a legitimate plan that everyone of us can follow to change things. If you are waiting for our officials to act in our best interest you are going to find it's never going to happen. It is up to you and me and everybody in our communities to work together and fight for our collective interests. Excellent book.
