He wants that leaf for various reasons through the changing seasons from spring until winter. Big Wolf keeps telling Little Wolf that it will fall and then he will have it. But the leaf doesn’t fall. One day in the winter, Big Wolf decides to climb the tree to retrieve the leaf for Little Wolf. It is a treacherous journey, but Big Wolf finds his way to the leaf, which crumbles in his fingers. Big Wolf safely returns to the ground, and both are happy because Little Wolf thought that the falling leaf was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. The images are a mixture of paint and crayon—full of vibrant colors and easy to see. If this books seems to have arrived from another era, then maybe that is only because it arrived from another country. Who knows? Perhaps there's a whole world out there of books for very young readers which manages to remain accessible without condescending. These wolves may wear hats and booties but you'd never mistake them for cartoons. With vibrant summer landscapes fading to winter, and plenty of warmth to go around. A classic on beauty and friendship.
