Immédiatement après avoir fini de lire le premier roman de cette série, j'ai commencer le second livre en espérant qu'il soit un peu plus travaillé que le premier livre.C'est assez sidérant de voir la différence directement dans les premières pages du livre, meilleur prose, meilleur écriture, meilleur descriptions et surtout une histoire et un style qui se tient beaucoup plus.Cette fois-ci on a plus l'impression de lire un roman policier/aventure fantaisie qu'une aventure plus ou moins intéressante faisant penser à du Warhammer/Dresden Files. L'intrigue est beaucoup plus constante, mieux proposé par l'auteur et surtout plus intéressante à lire.Fini les boutes où on a l'impression que tout est fait par un autre personnage, oui il y a des moments comme ça, mais tout était beaucoup moins en contrôle et je n'avais pas l'impression de lire un livre où tout était penser pour réussir. Sans parler qu'aucun punch de l'histoire ne m'obligeait cette fois-ci à feuiller à nouveau les première pages du livre, tout était claire, simple et intéressant à lire.Après tous ces éloges, pourquoi n'ais-je pas donner 5 étoiles à ce livre que j'ai lu en quelques jours seulement? He bien c'est simple, un point critique du premier livre reste encore présent et gâche une petite partie de ma lecture. Il est difficile de s'attacher aux personnages, même si le roman est écrit à la première personne je me fou un peu de ce qui arrive à Garret, je n'arrive pas à tripper sur son style, ses décision et à avoir sympathie de ce qui lui arrive. Je n'aime pas comparer, mais je suis loin d'aimer le personnage autant que Harry Dresden. Pour être franc je trouve le personnage juste pour dire plus attrayant que Katniss dans Hunger Game et vous avez juste à lire ma critique de ce livre pour voir que Katniss vole très bas dans mon palmarèse des personnages attachant.Donc une belle histoire simple, avec de l'humour et des dialogue très intéressant mais un personnage macho et difficile à apprécier/créer un lien avec, ce qui donne un livre très bon qui est un must pour les gens qui aime la Fantaisie mais se cherche un apport nouveau au genre.
Glen Cook does a pretty good job mixing classic detective noir with a low fantasy world. The main character is a cynical private investigator with a good heart underneath; there are plenty of scoundrels (human, non, and partially), a kidnapping, unexplained deaths, and double crosses. All good components of a classic detective story. Cook manages to work the fantasy elements in fairly well, and gives just enough of the world so the reader has a fair idea where the main character stands.I thought this one was actually a bit better than the first--the story was more noirish, the characters a little better defined, the setting a little more confined. I'm not sure if it was just a matter of getting comfortable with the characters and/or world, but there's a definite improvement from the first.The biggest negative is that Cook tries to write a bit too much like Raymond Chandler. He tries to evoke Chandler's rich use of language, and can't quite get the same feeling. When Cook sticks to his strength--a cynical world view plainly stated--the story, and language, are much stronger.

This is the second book about PI Garrett, classic noir with a fantasy twist. The author slowly shows up the fantasy side of the tale, though they are quite important, and we get to see some magic.The plot is classic, with blinds, red herrings, and a quest for revenge and coin, etc, but with Ogres playing the role of thugs, a mage as the powerful backer, and despite the twists, quite predictable.It is a bit formulaic, but the fantasy elements and how well they mesh with the rest of the plot help to make it an easy and entertaining read.

Continuing on with the Garrett series and I'm enjoying every page along the way. This book certainly improved upon the formula of the first one. Garrett is back at it with his whimsical cynicism and mystery within mystery adventures that leave you guessing till the very end. The only complaint here is the very end was a bit anti-climatic with too much dialogue about things hidden from the reader. Hopefully that's not a gimmick the author will use regularly, because I'm really liking this character and his odd assortment of associates. Two books in and even I can see that the poor guy needs a vacation -- I can't wait to see what gets thrown at him in the next book.
