Black Canary/Zatanna: Bloodspell (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
I loved this book! Black Canary is my favorite comic character and I really like Zatanna too, so I'm a little biased haha! It had everything I wanted: it's set in the old, non-New 52 universe, Canary is with Green Arrow, Zatanna and Canary are being all spunky catching bad guys, and there are wonderful JLA cameos and inside jokes for longtime comics readers. It was fun and lighthearted, which is my favorite kind of comic. The art was so fun and expressive as well, which always adds to my enjoyment. First of all, this isn't a book for those comic readers that only read the big event books or stick to Batman and Superman. If you're one of those readers that enjoys little side tales with characters that don't get the spotlight as often, then this book is for you. I really enjoyed this book. I'm a big fan of stories like this where you get a little one-off adventure with characters that aren't huge stars. The pairing of Black Canary and Zatanna was a bit of a surprise. I'd never really seen the two characters interact that much before. Dini does a good job making them seem like they've always been pals. One of the best parts of this book is the flashback scenes that show some of the highlights of how this friendship developed. It was great to see bits of Justice League history through this flashbacks that were erased by the New 52 relaunch. The rest of the plot was a little generic but still fun. Like I said, this book doesn't play into any other plots. Its a stand alone story focusing on two characters. For me, that's more exciting anyway. As for the art, Quinones' style is a bit cartoony but I think it fits the tone of this story well. His characters have great expressions, especially Black Canary.I'd suggest this book to anyone looking for a fun adventure. While it isn't for fans that just read the essential books, I recommend it for those looking to get deeper in DC's mythos.
