Black Wave: A Family's Adventure At Sea And The Disaster That Saved Them (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

This reads like a college paper that needed a few more rounds of edits. It's disjointed. It wanders. It repeats itself (in the wife's section, especially). And bores with history intertwined in the family's tale (the husband's section) (for a book that intertwines history and interesting reading, try Paula Poundstone's "There's Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say").And most important, I didn't like these people. They gave me no reason to like them. This book is a tale of first-world problems (mostly self-inflicted).I'm most happy about the fact that I didn't have to take a journey like this, lose half a leg, etc., to discover that the world is beautiful, that life is beautiful. I've known that for years. I've simply lived with my eyes open, to new experience, to the world around me, to people who cross my path. That's good that this family figured that out, but what a way to get there. I enjoyed this family's story--it was interesting to read about their experience living on a catamaran, all the ups and downs, and of course the disaster that changed their lives even more made for a gripping storyline. I can't relate to some things about this family--I've never sailed a boat, and I'll probably never own one--but I appreciated their honesty as well as the parents' efforts to give their children meaningful real-life experiences, and it was fun to learn a little about sailing, too.
