3rd QUARTERSiti Hajar Mohd. KhairiBlood Beastby Darren Shan217 pagesLittle, Brown & Company. $16.99isbn13: 9780316003773(Ages 12 & up)Twisted guts spilled out of Ma Spleen...Grubbs dreams. The twisted story comes back to life with its sounding plot. Now many of you might cringe at the gory details of brutal images such as spilling guts, but the plot keeps you hungry, like Grubbs, for more...Before it was the old age, in Bec's time. Now, it's back to the future with Grubbs as our howling protagonist undergoing changes based on the phases of the moon. It was when Grubbs and his friends discover the hidden tunnel that chaos blooms. His friend, Loch, dies. His half brother, Bill-e (though he doesn't know it), is in danger. The albino lady, Juni, reappears after the incident in Slawter and helps Dervish with Grubbs' case. Grubbs is terrified. Well who wouldn't be when they might turn into a werewolf? But hope is still strong. He has strong magic within him fighting the beast back.It was Dervish makes a terrible phone call that Grubbs is jittery about. He knows it's the right thing to do but he can't help but feel betrayed. Then, Juni helps and from then on...Grubbs might not be the same anymore...This book was so interesting. Even though the details are quite gross, the plot continues to be amazing. It might be a happy ending or it might not. Who knows? Darren Shan has a writing style that can bring a book to life. Read it. Really. You'll have a howl of a time.

What do You think about Blood Beast (2007)?

This book picks up with Grubbs Grady, an adolescent who is just starting to control and understand his magical abilities and is beginning to have a normal life after the events and slaughter that occured in books three and one when demons terrorized him, his brother BIll-E, and his uncle Dervish. He awakens at night to find he is partially turned to a werewolf and something within him fights it (He assumes it's his magic). Hoping that he doesn't have the same curse of lyncanthropy that his sister AND brother had he attempts to go on with life. At school his friend Loch who is a bully to Bill-E decides that while his uncles away they should party for a day at Grubbs house. Grubbs says yes and the party catches on. Later the next day him and Loch along with Bill-E dig for treasure, only to find a hole that Bill-E and Grubbs refuse to stop digging. Later that night Grubbs awakens half wolf at the hole digging ferociously. The hole is substantially bigger and he is left wondering what within him made him keep digging. The author really makes this a great first person book. I usually hate first person books due to their narrators being whiny adolescents or adults who complain about each problem that comes their way. Grubbs can be admirable and entertaining at times which is a great aspect of how this story as told. The author even does his best to depict the offhand subthoughts we all have sometimes. Five stars.

Like its predecessor, Blood Beast is only okay. In some aspects it is an improvement but in others it is a downgrade. The narrative is returned back to Grubbs Grady who learns in this book that (gasp!) he has lyncanthropy. As he deals with that he also deals with your typical high school rubbish with him flirting with some girl he likes named Renee' while Renee's brother, Locke, who is also Grubbs' best friend, bullies Bill-E, Grubbs' other best friend. Why you ask, does a series about demons now feel like an episode of Dawson's Creek? Beats me.The only real redeemable quality is the twist ending when Lord Loss finally shows up (yes, he's hardly in this one) and with a betrayal from a key character (spoiler alert, but not really). It's cliff-hanger also leads us to the wicked cool follow up, Demon Apocalypse. What made this better than Bec was that it was easier to connect with the characters due to them not being bland and them being contemporary. What made it worse than Bec was that it lacked action and instead dealt with, for the most part, very uninteresting story lines. It is important to read it though for what happens next.

I love all of The Demonata series books so far. This one was slow starting, no gore and leaves you asking for more at the end of the book. A complete twist from what you would expect. I did research about this one before reading only because i was told it wasn't that good. The research made me skeptical as well. Despite the hear say i read anyway. Again it starts out slow and things are completely different the expected from beginning to end. So happy i did read it though. Very good book but very different from the first four. Worth a read.
