One month of moving from hotel, to hotel, a month of making sure I was never alone with Vincenzo and that I was alone with Santo as often as humanly possible. For reasons unknown to me, Vincenzo’s entourage considered Santo the ideal guardian for me. The men, all of whom were older than him and much less sophisticated, seemed to be of the opinion that Santo was emasculated and inept when it came to dealing with women ‘like a man should’, and they didn't shy away from making those comments in my presence either. I was embarrassed and angry on Santo’s behalf, but I very quickly discovered the method in the madness. Despite constantly making dirty advances toward me, Vincenzo didn’t even try to hide that he was going to strip clubs and inviting sex workers for parties in his hotel room on quiet nights in. I found out Santo was considered a bit of a spoilsport when it came to those kinds of events, which left him “stuck” guarding me while everyone was out to prove their masculinity with women for whose attention they needed to pay.
