Bluefish (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

BluefishPat SchmatzTravis and Grandpa move to a new town, which is where Travis meets Velveeta. She knows that Travis has a secret, and is determined to figure out what it is. Velveeta considers that he might not know how to read based on the information in the book she is reading, and she happened to be correct. She wants to help Travis improve his reading skills, and together McQueen (the English teacher) and Velveeta help Travis succeed.I enjoyed reading this book because it was very descriptive and a little different from other books I have read in the past. My favorite part was when Grandpa admitted to Travis that he was the one who accidentally killed Rosco by running him over in the driveway. I think that others should read this book too because it was interesting to read about Travis bonding with Grandpa, making a new friend, and to increase his level of self-esteem. This book would be appropriate for any teenager because this book does contain complex and inappropriate language for young children. This book was wonderful and beautiful and I loved it.When I grow up I want to be like Calvin, taking in children and caring for them, giving them a place to call home where they can forget about their broken houses for a while. When The Book Thief was mentioned, I realized I get over-excited when books I love are mentioned in books I am beginning to love. Velveeata is such an amazing character, I adored her."I’ll be a sitter-upper waitress if I have to.”
