Bones Of The Lost (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

" The world is rife with evil and misfourtune, but is also full of good people determined to right wrongs. I would not sink into sadness. I would celebrate those who refuse to give up. Those who battle to make things better" p.400This author is a producer of the "Bones" series on Fox. This book is the 16th in the series of mysteries based on Reich's time as a working forensic pathologist.Temperance "Tempe" Brennan lives in North Carolina with her cat "Bird". She and her ex husband, lawyer Janis "Pete" Petersens, have raised a twenty something daughter presently serving in Afgahanistan, much to her chagrin. Pete is remarrying and keeps asking Tempe to help him out with the wedding plans and she keeps drawing boundaries that Pete ignores. She's involved on again off again with Andrew Ryan, trying to move on.In this book, Brennan has been tapped to help indentify remains that have been smuggled into the States illegally: five small canine mummies from Peru. This, however, is the tip of the iceberg as she also deals with an unidentified Jane Doe found by the side of the road, and her connection to a human trafficking ring that takes Tempe all the way to Operation Enduring Freedom....This book was wonderful. Life is one big puzzle, and Reichsloves puzzles. The afterward gives the reader a chance to hear backstories and thought processes that develop into a hghly sucessful series. I have seen a few of the shows, but like THIS version of Dr. Brennan much more than the one in the Fox seies. I again thank my friend who gave me the book and introduced me to a new (to me) author. This is a series I will continue to watch for and enjoy. Title: Bones of the LostAuthor: Kathy ReichsSeries: Temperance Brennan #16Synopsis (from bn.com):When Charlotte police discover the body of a teenage girl along a desolate stretch of two-lane highway, Temperance Brennan fears the worst. The girl’s body shows signs of foul play. Inside her purse police find the ID card of a prominent local businessman, John-Henry Story, who died in a horrific flea market fire months earlier. Was the girl an illegal immigrant turning tricks? Was she murdered? The medical examiner has also asked Tempe to examine a bundle of Peruvian dog mummies confiscated by U.S. Customs. A Desert Storm veteran named Dominick Rockett stands accused of smuggling the objects into the country. Could there be some connection between the trafficking of antiquitiesand the trafficking of humans? As the case deepens, Tempe must also grapple with personal turmoil. Her daughter Katy, grieving the death of her boyfriend in Afghanistan, impulsively enlists in the Army. As pressure mounts from all corners, Tempe soon finds herself at the center of a conspiracy that extends all the way from South America, to Afghanistan, and right to the center of Charlotte. “A genius at building suspense” (Daily News, New York), Kathy Reichs is at her brilliant best in this thrilling novel. My thoughts: Although this #16 book in this great series was better than the last, it still wasn’t my favorite. I don’t know if the series and the author’s writing style and character are changing or if I’m just changing as a reader, but the last few in the series have just been ok for me.This latest installment almost appeared to be two completely different plot lines to me. Yes, it all finally came together at the end of course, but it left me confused for a bit and shaking my head where we were going. I slogged through the first part . . . then all of a sudden Temperance was on a plane on her way to a military base in Afghanistan to provide some consultation work on a case there and I absolutely flew through this middle part as the plot just picked up and the story was fascinating . . . and then she returned home to tie the story together in a third part which was so so at best. This book had some ups and downs for me . . . boring first part, great second part, so so third part.I just wish the two almost disparate story lines would have been tied together a bit more throughout the entire book leaving the reader with more satisfaction throughout the whole novel! There were a couple interesting small plot developments presented at the end about some of the characters which leaves me intrigued where the next book will go . . . hmmmm.Well #17 in this series just came out, and of course I will be getting it and trying it out. One can’t leave a series unfinished . . . let’s not be ridiculous . . . :)And remember,Books Are Life,
