Boğulan Kız (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

A concise novel, this is not. But that's what I love about Kiernan's writing: she lets the main character ramble in a stream-of-consciousness style while maintaining my interest in the story. This is an impressive skill that should not be overlooked. The story itself is creepy but not overtly terrifying the way The Red Tree was (for me, at least). Fascinating and not always easy to follow, this was a ghost story that maintained its mystery until the end. "Psycho-babble" is how I would describe The Drowning Girl. I didn't like the conversational style of this book. Some people find that style charming, but I found it irritating and frustrating. Imp, the girl writing her memoir, keeps repeating the same ideas over and over. We get it already. You don't have to say it ten times in ten different ways! Maybe if the book were edited to one-third of its current length, it would not be so annoying.I think this book is a perfect example of trying way too hard to be clever. This book was exasperating, with little cutesy asides, which were in fact NOT cutesy at all. There were also moments when I felt that the author just wanted to show off about her knowledge of random facts which I had no inclination of even wanting to ever know. There were also many literary references that were completely unnecessary. Finally, if you want to feel like you're on the verge of a nervous breakdown or in the middle of one, then this is the book for you. It's as if the author WANTS you to enter a giant maze, blindfolded, tell you a bunch of lies as to how to get out, and laughs in your face as you circle around and round with no means of escape. I wasted about five hours of my life reading this disaster.

What do You think about Boğulan Kız (2014)?

I like the way the author uses myths & arts. Reminds me of Angela Carter & Tanith Lee.

Tough read. Book club hated it. Regardless, I did manage to have good discussion.

This novel was simply amazing. So much more than a ghost story.
